The ORIGIN STORY Part 1 – BottleShots.ai: A New Hope

Chapter I: The Phantom Startup

The year was 2006. MySpace was king, YouTube was barely a toddler, and Facebook was still wearing digital pull-ups. The iPhone hadn’t even been born yet. And in the middle of all this, my college buddy David Elkins (Obi-Wan Kenobi in flannel) and Daniel Chapin (Young Jedi Dan) launched a rogue creative alliance called Artisan Media.

Our mission: create powerful, cinematic videos for wineries looking to tell their brand stories—from the vineyard crew to the cellar masters.

But Jedi dreams don’t pay the bills. Between video shoots, I had a scrappy idea: what if we offered professional bottle photography for winery websites? At the time, every wine SKU needed a clean bottle image—one per vintage.

Enter George Christie , founder of Wine Industry Network and a legend in his own right, who gave us the mic at the annual Wine Road meeting. Boom—50 wineries signed up. One small problem: we had no idea how to photograph wine bottles.

Chapter II: Attack of the Bottles

So here’s the skinny. My good friend Gregory Ahn and presently the owner of Folktale Winery & Vineyards lent us his Healdsburg conference room. My sister Lisa Pike Totah —fresh out of Cal Poly—signed on as our intern. We spent 4+ hours sweating over reflections, foils, embossed labels, and every lighting challenge glass could throw at us. Shooting wine bottles isn’t for the faint of heart—or amateurs.

But we figured it out! And just like that, 50 winery clients had pro-quality bottle shots. The orders kept coming. That little side hustle created the cash flow we needed to survive. Honestly, without it, Artisan Media—and the future Left Coast Marketing & Design —might’ve been a short-lived dream.

Chapter III: The Clone Years

Between 2006 and 2012, we were bootstrapping like rebels on a desert moon. We scaled bottle photography while juggling video projects, slowly building a name in wine country as the crew that could deliver sharp product shots and lean, effective marketing.

We weren’t flashy. But we were fast, honest, and dependable. And just when we thought things might level out…

Chapter IV: Revenge of the Marketplace

In 2012, a forward-thinking Jedi named Andrew Kamphuis along with his fellow Jedi warrior Sheri Hebbeln awarded us a contract to shoot 1,000 bottle shots for wineries marketing through Facebook Marketplace—back when it was still trying to become the next eBay, not your cousin’s garage sale scroll fest.

Around the same time along came one of the most talented human beings I have ever known in the galaxy Tony Immordino who joined our rebel forces to take our Web Design + Development powers to the next level, The revenue generated from our first BIG Bottle Shots project was our HYPERDRIVE. It seeded the growth of Left Coast Marketing and allowed us to finally quit our day jobs and become one of the most trusted Marketing + Creative agencies in the wine industry.

But as our web design work scaled, we noticed something disturbing in the force…

  • Product images weren’t matching the quality of the wine.
  • Branding was inconsistent.
  • And 45% of online customers said low-quality photos were one of the top 3 reasons they did NOT trust a product.

For wineries selling direct-to-consumer, first impressions are everything. And online, that impression may come from a single image.

Chapter V: A New Hope (and a Big Risk)

We had a choice: ride out the status quo—or disrupt ourselves.

We’d already watched Canva vaporize parts of our graphic design business. And we knew if we didn’t innovate, someone else would.

So we made the risky, slightly terrifying decision to build a solution that could potentially replace our own product photography services.

Because in this galaxy, the only way to win is to evolve faster than the algorithm chasing you.

Chapter VI: The Rise of BottleShots.ai

This is where Han Solo Tony Immordino and I got to work on something different. Something bold.

We built a tech-forward creative platform that was simple, accessible, and designed for the real-world chaos of winery marketing teams.

Introducing: BottleShots.ai – powered by the Force.

In 5 simple steps, any winery can now create pro-quality product images:

  1. Upload your label
  2. Choose your bottle type
  3. Set the angle
  4. Click generate
  5. Pop the cork—you just saved a week of studio back-and-forth

Wineries can now:

  • Start promoting wines before bottling
  • Create more consistent, branded online stores
  • Reallocate their budget toward actually selling wine
  • Empower their teams (and give that tired intern a break)
  • Oh—and finally update that 2014-era website

All for less than half the cost of traditional studio photography. It’s faster. It’s DIY. And it’s better than your iPhone.
